Brownsea Island is home to around 200 red squirrels and is one of the last remaining places in the south of England where you can see one. Join me for a day photographing these charismatic little creatures as they roam freely through the woodland. Having 'Scouted' out the area (you can read all about Baden-Powell and the Scouts at Brownsea) I have found the perfect location where the squirrels like to hang out with good light, and September will have the squirrels active searching for food for the winter while not too hot or cold.

Along with the squirrels there are many peacocks and beautiful woodlands to walk through.  All levels of photographic ability are welcome. Learn which focusing techniques will get you the best image, how depth of field and white balance will dramatically change your shot, and how framing makes all the difference between a good image and a great image.

The workshop will start when we catch the first ferry of the day over to the island from Poole Quay at 10:00, ending around 14:00 but you may wish to stay longer to explore the island on your own. There are toilets and a cafe at the visitor centre. We can either stop for lunch here or you may wish to bring a picnic and snacks.

Meeting point:

We will meet at 09:45 at: Brownsea Island Ferries yellow kiosk on the quayside BH15 1HJ.

Please note:
  • Full payment is required at time of confirmation of booking.
  • There are extra costs for entry to Brownsea Island and the ferry, which are now pre-bookable as a combined ticket.  £12:50 for National Trust members, £21.50 for non members.  You are advised to purchase your ticket as soon as possible, or if you transfer me the money, I can get your ticket along with mine to ensure we are on the same ferry.
  • Quay Visitors car park BH15 1SB is the most suitable place to park.
  • Suitable for the less mobile, it is a five minute walk to where we shall base ourselves.  There is a flat path most of the way, then up a short slope in to the woods.
  • We will be on our feet most of the time as there is no seating in the woods.  However, there are a number of logs etc, and the floor is quite comfy when not wet!
