Deer workshops will be held at one of my favourite local places for their abundance of wildlife, including heron and other water birds, parakeet, kestrel, woodpecker, squirrel, rabbit etc, at Bushy Park, just west of London.  Full details and directions will be provided, with easy access and free parking.  We will of course stop to capture anything that catches our eye, but this workshop is all about the most famous residents - the deer.

Red and Fallow Deer roam freely all year round.  Autumn undoubtedly has the best photographic opportunities with the rut and the gorgeous colours, but all seasons offer something different - winter; frost, spring; colours, fawns and velvet coated antlers.

We will have an early start often at 7am to make the most of the morning light, and if we're lucky catch the breath of the deer in the cold air.  Learn how to best capture those classic portrait shots, wider landscape or tightly cropped images, which focusing techniques will get you the best image, how depth of field and white balance will dramatically change your shot, and how framing makes all the difference between a good image and a great image.

We'll stop for a quick image review over a hot drink (and maybe a bacon bap!) after a couple of hours, then head out for more images before finishing around 11am.

We will go off the paths across very uneven and often wet ground, so sturdy walking boots are recommended, along with clothing appropriate for the time of year (mornings can be very cold, then warm up considerably, layers are a good idea).

Important Info

  • Full payment is required at time of confirmation of booking.
  • Full directions will be given on booking.
  • We will be on our feet the whole time apart from our short snack stop, places to sit are very limited.
  • Due to the uneven ground and time on our feet, this workshop isn't suitable for those with limited mobility (At this time I am in this category, only offering shorter workshops, but these will always be on offer.)

What to bring

  • Comfortable/suitable clothing for the time of year.
  • Suitable footwear such as walking boots as we will be walking across uneven ground which could be wet.
  • Food/drink, although we will stop at a cafe half way through.

Camera equipment

  • DSLR, mirrorless or bridge camera.
  • Variety of lenses.  Long lenses such as 300mm for cropped frame, 500mm for full frame, for close portrait shots, bearing in mind we must keep our distance from the deer.  Mid range lenses such as 70-200mm for shots including the environment and when the deer are closer.  Wider angle such as 17-35mm for more landscape shots.  If you don't own a suitable lens you can easily hire one for the day.  If you don't know if the lenses you have are suitable, just drop me a line.
  • Monopods can be useful if you have a very heavy lens.
  • Spare memory cards.
  • Fully charged batteries.

Please note

  • As with all wildlife, sightings can not be guaranteed and behaviour is unpredictable.
  • Please respect the wildlife and don't get too close or do anything to cause any distress - it is advised by the park to stay 50m away from the deer.
  • Do not feed the wildlife and take any litter home with you.
  • The ground will be very uneven in places.
  • There are toilets nearby.
